LEFTOVERS….A PROVOCATIVE THREE WAY GAY PLAY Initially when drafting out new material, a playwright scribbles out a premise – a mission statement – a central theme. This could be triggered by living out or witnessing a single moment. A moment which may lead to some sweet inspiration. Leftovers is undoubtedly an openly gay play. As a playwright, I wanted to explore the male libido and open up both its power and potential destructiveness. Each of the three characters are living out a different decade of their lives. Three characters – three voices – three agendas. The power, the liveliness of their libido illuminates on us, giving us a peek of how complexities can arise maybe provoking a consequence of loneliness and isolation and ironically so – a slap in the face of really being powerless. I’m sure this may appear bleak. Not at all. Maybe a little cerebral with a button being pushed here and there. But it’s this button pushing, this being provocative that makes these characters real. I believe every gay man will find a moment or two in Leftovers in which they may have acted out in some point of their lives. Hopefully for every other person of different sexual orientations who take in Leftovers, they will be without judgment or expectation and will endure if anything compassion and a longing to embrace the three young men they see on stage. |
